Graham McTavish from Outlander took over as Buck MacKenzie for a critical purpose.

This year's Outlander season seven, part one saw several significant cast additions, including the reintroduction of Buck MacKenzie (played by Diarmaid Murtagh).

The 41-year-old Irish actor took over for Graham McTavish, who had previously appeared in the part as a cameo.

Murtagh filled the part full-time, prompting some to wonder why McTavish, who also plays Buck's cousin Dougal MacKenzie, was no longer in the role.

"He loved Outlander and, of course, he and Sam do their lovely spin-off [Men In Kilts], he's lovely, he's so much fun," Smith said of McTavish, 62.

"That's all part of it," she continued. I think they invite everyone into the show because they're such friendly people - and I think we forget Scotland is also a character."

Smith explained how Murtagh landed the part: "Well, I've known him for years and he has that sort of ruggedness and likability and a noble feel about him."

Smith's current projects include the upcoming Outlander prequel Blood of My Blood.

However, she will be working on the eighth and final season of Outlander, as well as other projects, until then.
