How Sergio Brown, a former NFL player, came to be detained in connection with his mother's murder

Sergio Brown, a former NFL safety, was arrested on a murder warrant after being linked to the death of his mother, raising many questions about what happened to him as he waits for extradition.

On September 15, when Myrtle Jean Simmons-Brown and Sergio Brown's family was unable to reach either mother or son, they alerted the police.

Myrtle's body was discovered the following day at around 2 p.m. by a creek close to the house she and Sergio shared.

In the Chicago neighborhood of Maywood, according to police, who at the time stated that they were unable to find her son.

The Cook County Medical Examiner confirmed to E! News that her case was deemed a homicide and that the cause of death was several injuries sustained in an assault.

Our family will all get through this together, Nick Brown, Myrtle's artist son, wrote in an Instagram post on September 17.

"Mom always told me, 'tough times don't last' and our last conversation about tough times being temporary is my beacon of hope."

The artist complimented his mother, who is 73 years old, for being "strong, caring, diligent, fancy, funny," and for encouraging him in his artistic endeavors.
