Over 55,000 new-model Tesla vehicles are affected by a safety issue with the brakes.

Due to a potential problem with brake fluid detection, Tesla issued a recall for certain of its more recent model vehicles.

According to the National Highway Traffic Safety Administration (NHTSA),

The recall notice affects 55,000 of its Model X vehicles and can be fixed with a software update.

The car may not detect low brake fluid and not flash a warning light, according to NHTSA.

"Without a warning light, the vehicle may be driven with low brake fluid,

which can reduce braking performance and increase the risk of crash,"

the government body in charge of overseeing safety noted.

A free over-the-air software upgrade from Tesla is now available to impacted consumers.
